DAX for Power BI

Category
Data analysis
Duration
10-15 hours
Syllabus
Tailored to you

DAX is the calculation language used in Power BI to create measures, calculated columns and complex business indicators. With DAX, users can turn the data in a model into meaningful information, building reports that answer real business questions.

The course is for Power BI users who want to go beyond basic report building and be able to design correct calculations, performance indicators, comparisons, percentages, time-based analyses and dynamic results that change with the report’s filters and selections.

The training is designed around the participants’ level, the structure of the data your company uses and the kinds of reports you need. The aim is for participants to understand not only the syntax of the language, but above all the logic by which Power BI calculates results within the data model.

Typical topics include:

  • Basic principles of DAX and its role in Power BI

  • Understanding the data model, relationships between tables and sound data structure

  • Creating calculated columns for row-level calculations

  • Creating measures for dynamic calculations in reports and dashboards

  • Basic aggregation, filtering, logical and text functions

  • Understanding filter context and row context through practical examples

  • Using the CALCULATE function to change how a result is calculated

  • Creating business indicators such as sales, cost, profit, margin and percentage change

  • Time-based analysis, period comparisons and year-to-date or previous-period calculations

  • Using variables for cleaner, more readable and more efficient calculations

  • Basic DAX optimisation practices for faster, more reliable reports

  • Organising measures and good naming for easier model maintenance

By the end of the course, participants will be able to build more meaningful and reliable Power BI reports, using DAX for dynamic calculations, business indicators and analyses that adapt to the needs of management and of individual departments.

How it works

Every training course is designed from scratch

  1. Preparatory meeting

We analyse your company’s processes and particularities, and agree with you on the syllabus you need.

  2. The training

No off-the-shelf course packs. Examples drawn from your employees’ real day-to-day work.

  3. Support afterwards

Participants have our support email address available for any questions that come up.

  4. Follow-up meeting

About a month later, a two-hour meeting to address whatever came up in practical use.
